On May 5, 2023, Bevrijdingsfestival Drenthe will celebrate the liberation of the Kingdom from German and Japanese occupiers in 1945. The national day commemorates those who have died fighting for this freedom and all civilians since World War II who have made immense contributions to peacekeeping missions worldwide. During the festival, attendees honor their legacy and celebrate a future of liberty and equality that they helped create!
As everyone moves into a new era, the emphasis of May 5 has changed from alluding to past liberation to looking forward toward freedom. This day is an opportunity for Netherlanders to commemorate regained liberty but also contemplate the importance and value of democracy and independence now as well as in the days ahead.
