It was 1984 when a magical jam session first solidified the notion of establishing the Cultural Association Maré de Agosto. This brainchild of some incredibly talented artists from the Azores, who sought to bring together musicians on Santa Maria Island, quickly gained traction and support from many other local performers. Before long, intentions began manifesting into reality as these gifted individuals came together and formed this musical association that continues to drive culture today—an incredible feat for something that started with such humble beginnings!
The Festival began with events taking place on different stages across the island. In 1986, a permanent location was established in Baía da Praia Formosa—only 20 meters from the ocean—for its stunning beauty and magical atmosphere. This became the official venue for all future iterations of the Festival, as it contained all the necessary criteria to make it successful. In addition, a revolutionary notion arose that year. Driven by the eagerness to learn, exchange experiences, and encounter new individuals, many visitors from Portugal, the United States of America, Africa, and Brazil flocked to Santa Maria.
Out of the necessity to accommodate its dynamic growth and ambitious goals, the A.C.M.A., the Cultural Association Maré de Agosto, was officially founded in 1987 with a mission to organize the International Festival of Music Maré de Agosto as their primary activity, but also extending into theater, the plastic arts, workshops, photography, and more! With extraordinary performances from over 150 groups and 1,000 individual musicians, the Festival has already made its mark in Santa Maria. Many prominent names belonging to both the national and international music scenes showcased their talent at this event, representing an array of sonic styles and cultural backgrounds.
The renowned Festival Maré de Agosto 2023 is set to take place from August 24th-26th.
