In 1897, Frederick W. Angier, a traveling passenger agent from the Union Pacific Railroad, had an idea to imitate Greeley's "Potato Day" celebration and proposed it to the editor of the Cheyenne Daily Sun-Leader. As a result of this suggestion, plans for Frontier Day were formulated at Tivoli Saloon, located at 16th Street and Carey, with riveting activities such as pony races, bronco busting, and steer roping!
In the early days, these events were viewed as a trial of a cowboy's aptitude. The first-ever event was so successful that they increased it to two days and added an extra parade for the following year. As time went on, more contests were included in the rodeo, and its prestige began to grow. Nowadays, this is one of the most genuine and biggest rodeo competitions around!
From its humble beginnings as a cowboy roundup with bronco-busting contests and pony races, Cheyenne Frontier Days have evolved into the world's biggest outdoor rodeo.
