Doc Watson, an 8-time Grammy award-winning musician from Deep Gap, North Carolina, was nothing short of exceptional. President Jimmy Carter referred to him as a "national treasure." He even earned the prestigious National Medal of Arts, gifted by former president Bill Clinton. While his own county, Watauga County, deemed him an "American Hero," if you were to ask Doc himself, he would humbly reply that he is simply "one of the people."
In 1998, the Doc Watson Appreciation Day was ceremoniously held on the grounds of the Historic Cove Creek School in Sugar Grove to recognize his countless contributions and generosity towards the community. During these events, money would be raised for locals who were facing financial hardships, as well as funds to restore this National Register-listed school. This event honors Doc's legacy today by carrying on the selfless spirit that he showed daily while living! Doc Watson played an integral role in safeguarding the history of Western Watauga County, and his legacy endures through a facility used for continual community initiatives.
The next edition of Doc & Rosa Lee Watson MusicFest is set to take place on July 15, 2023. The Doc & Rosa Lee Watson MusicFest has been a beloved event for decades, taking place on the grounds of the historic Cove Creek School in Sugar Grove, also home to the prestigious Doc & Merle Watson Folk Art Museum. Countless Grammy-nominated, award-winning performers, and even newcomers, have graced its stages over the years, making this festival one of high acclaim.
