The National Folk Festival was first known as the Port Phillip District Folk Music Festival. When it launched in February 1967 at the Teachers College of Melbourne University, its potential to become a national event had yet to be unlocked. "In Australia, there is no specific place for people to come together and exchange songs, styles, or ideas," committee member Mick Counihan said in his opening remarks. "Our goal with this annual festival is to create a focused and meaningful presence within our nation's folk music culture."
As the years pass, the organizer continues to reinvent and reinvigorate the National Folk Festival. In 2023, it will be no different! The team behind the National Folk Festival remains devoted to its foundations while adapting to current obstacles—a melting pot of music styles and tales transcending generations. So mark your calendars, folks—let's make history together once again at one of Australia's longest-running national festival celebrations!
Do not pass on your chance to be a part of the 2023 National Folk Festival this Easter long weekend! From April 6th to 10th, celebrate at the Exhibition Park in Canberra.
