In 1940, the SantaCaliGon Days Festival was organized to commemorate Independence's spectacular past, the gateway to the Oregon, California, and Santa Fe Trails. After World War II in 1947, another festival followed suit. Unfortunately, however, it wasn't until 1973 that this particular event returned for subsequent years after that.
In the past, the festival was called Three Trails Days and consisted of a beard and mustache contest, a Miss Independence pageant, and a pioneer costume competition. By 1974 though, this event was christened "Santa-Cali-Gon Days," which had been coined by Velma Katschkowsky in 1940 after winning an official name for a festival contest. Fast forward to today - over half a century later - and SantaCaliGon is now one of America's premier festivals drawing in more than 300 thousand visitors yearly!
