Annually at the end of August or the beginning of September, a plethora of street artists and musicians from around the globe congregate in Novi Sad to celebrate The Street Musicians Festival (Serbian: Фестивал уличних свирача / Festival uličnih svirača). This non-competitive event is proudly sponsored by the City of Novi Sad and organized by the Centre for Culture Animation.
Robert Kolar, the former MP for culture, founded this festival in 2001 as an international event that combines performers of various music genres playing unique instruments. Along with street shows and acrobatics, several dances are featured each year. The festival was designed to be a platform where Novi Sad's up-and-coming talent can showcase their skills alongside worldly artists.
Serbia's Tourism Organization honored the festival with its prestigious award, the Tourist Flower, for its contribution to cultural tourism.
After being granted funding from the European Union in 2012, this festival achieved the prestigious status of being an official European Festival. As a result, over 150 celebrated artists from all around the world have performed on its stage!
