For over forty-eight years, the Walnut Valley Association has been dedicated to putting on the renowned Flat-Picking Championships Festival - now more commonly known as "Walnut Valley Festival" or simply "Winfield" among long-time attendees. Since its inception in 1972, this remarkable event has delighted and captivated music lovers from all around.
In 1999, the International Bluegrass Music Association greatly esteemed the Walnut Valley Festival when it received its first "IBMA Bluegrass Event Of The Year" award. This recognition was a momentous occasion for all who have worked hard to make this festival successful.
The Walnut Valley Festival has come a long way since its inception in 1972, now extending to 5 days of celebration on the 3rd weekend of September. During this awe-inspiring event, four stages are set for "family fare" entertainment with more than thirty acts and eight contests-- two international competitions larger in scope than five national contests, which conclude with one Walnut Valley contest! What began as an intimate gathering of 10 acts and two competitions is now a renowned festival filled with culture and artistry.
As the third weekend in September rolls around each year, Winfield, Kansas, eagerly welcomes its beloved Walnut Valley Festival. People from near and far congregate at the Fairgrounds to celebrate with music and merriment. It's an educational experience for all involved but holds a special place deep within their soul - like coming home again after being away for too long. That is what makes this event so unique!
