In 2022, the WYEP Summer Music Festival was made possible through generous donations from fans memberships, sponsors, and UPMC Health Plan. The festival's partner at Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy also gave unwavering support to independent radio programming and community initiatives in Pittsburgh.
WYEP Summer Music Festival celebrates the community's rich diversity with various genres and song types. The 2019 event was headlined by indie folk band Devotchka, while R&B-Hip Hop artist Cautious Clay, Nevada Color, and local Afro-Indigenous singer Clara Kent each offered unique sets that made it an unforgettable experience. In 2020 Clara was voted Pittsburgh Musician of the Year for her captivating style blending soul, jazz, blues, and hip-hop sounds—a testament to her remarkable artistry.
The festival is proud to showcase an array of talented performers from the WYEP Reimagination Project in its program. The program offers a distinctive pathway for high school teenagers from Pittsburgh who wants to sharpen their musical talents, get acquainted with the music field, and jump-start their career.
As a collaboration between The Andy Warhol Museum and Pittsburgh, the first Summer Music Festival debuted in 1998 and has been held annually at various venues around the city since then. In 2008, it settled into its new home of Schenley Plaza - where it continues to happen each year - creating an opportunity for folks from all corners of the world to experience magnificent artists like Soul Asylum, Sinead O'Connor, Jason Isbell, and Valerie June. With 2022 marking 25 years since its launch and no plans to stop soon, there's never been a better time to celebrate this momentous occasion!
